GRP for Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics, or FRP for Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics are all one and the same. This is a Composite Material of Fiberglass as reinforcement and RESIN as the matrix. GRP as a composite material implies that the material act in concert -that is, one helping the other – hence the term reinforcement. In some cases, the matrix can be thought of as the glue that binds the reinforcements together and protects the reinforcements from environmental effects.

GRP or FRP are a subdivision of the composites field in which the matrix is a polymer (or plastic) and the reinforcement is always a fiber. This is the largest subdivision of composites. Common usage has now largely assigned the terms FRP or fiber reinforced plastics to the more narrow field of fiberglass reinforcement of polyester resin.

The term Advance Composites designates certain composite materials with superior properties. Although the term is not precise, it generally refers to composites with greater than 50% fibers by volume and with a modulus of elasticity of the reinforcement greater than 30 x 10 6 psi (200,000 MPa).

General Advantages of GRP

GRP can provide a specific modulus (ratio of material stiffness to density) that is
three and a half to five times greater than steel or aluminum.

The fatigue endurance limit is much higher than for steel or aluminum.

Toughened GRP can give impact energies significantly higher than aluminum
alloys.

Design flexibility is greater and can allow for physical property directionality in
parts where desired.

The potential for corrosion is significantly reduced.

GRP can eliminate many joints and can be fastened by simplified methods, thus
eliminating both structural weaknesses and manufacturing cost
